My Inspiration

Everyone who does anything has to be inspired by something. Whether it’s an amazing book, a fantastic movie or a mind-blowing piece of art, something wonderful always drives an artist. For me, the thing that most makes me want to do something creative is music. Whenever I’m writing, or painting, or working, I have to have music playing. A good song moves me in way that other things simply cannot do. It sounds pretty cheesy putting it like that, but I’m sure everyone knows that feeling, whether they’ll admit it or not.

I’d just like to make one thing abundantly clear: I have no musical talent whatsoever, and nor will I ever. I took piano lessons for six years and was utterly useless at it, even after all that time. I have no ear for notes, and can’t tell if I’m on key or not. Which of course means I am an abysmal singer. Still, I love listening to music.

My favourite artists are those that combine great lyrics with somewhat grandiose music. I don’t know if that makes sense, but I don’t know how else to describe them (I may not have mentioned, but I know very little about music). Some of my favourite artists right now: The Flaming Lips, Arcade Fire, The Decemberists, Radiohead.

So what is your muse? What makes you want to drop everything and grab a paintbrush or rush to your computer to write?
